What Does Mute Mean in Gmail?

Muting an email is simply called the process after which no emails from the muted conversation will be absent from the primary inbox. The muted emails are archived by Gmail itself and can be found under the folder titled All Mails. Even though the emails related to the muted thread may miss it to the primary inbox, they are not completely removed and the user can find even the newest additions to the muted conversation as and when searched for. Muting let the user stay worry-free regarding the space occupied by personal or unwanted messages in the primary inbox. 

How to mute an email conversation?

Step 1. Open the concerned Gmail account on the device.

Step 2. Choose the email thread that wanted to be muted.

Step 3. Find the More option that appears on top of the email and click on it.

Step 4. From the drop-down menu that appears, choose the Mute option.

Step 5. The email is now muted and removed from the primary inbox. A notification regarding the status of the muting process appears on the bottom left part of the Gmail window for a few seconds.

How to find the muted emails?

Muted emails can be found via two different methods.

Method 1

Step 1. Open the Gmail account.

Step 2. Go to the search bar that appears at the top part of the Gmail window. 

Step 3. Type is: muted in the search box and click enter.

Step 4. The list of muted emails comes up along with a “Muted” label on the side.

Method 2

Step 1. Open the Gmail account.

Step 2. Find the All Mails folder located on the sidebar of the Gmail window and click on it.

Step 3. All the mails received by the account comes up and the muted messages will be present among them with a ‘Muted’ tag alongside.

How to unmute a conversation on Gmail?

Method 1

Step 1. Open the Gmail account on the concerned device.

Step 2. Open the email that is intended to be unmuted.

Step 3. Find the Remove Label option on the top of the Gmail window, next to the Muted option, and click on it.

Step 4. The muted label will be immediately removed and a notification intimating the same will be received in the account.

Method 2

Step 1. Open the Gmail application on the device.

Step 2. Open the email that has to be unmuted and find the More option that appears on the top of the email.

Step 3. Click on the More option and choose the Unmute option from the drop-down list that appears.

Step 4. Right after clicking on the Unmute option, the conversation is unmuted and a notification regarding the status of the muting process appears at the bottom part of the Gmail window.
