What Does Starred Mean in Gmail?

Starring emails is one of the many features employed by Gmail to help any mail stand out from the lot. Especially with Gmail accounts that have a huge inflow of messages, the need to have a provision to mark the important ones among them for future reference is high. Once starred, a small yellow star appears by the email, denoting its starred status, and will remain there until the star is removed by the account user. The Gmail account holder can assign numerous types and colors of stars according to the availability in the application.

How to mark an email as starred?

Step 1. Open Gmail on the device.

Step 2. In the inbox, find the email to be starred and on the left side of the mail, locate the star option and click on it.

Step 3. You can find that a yellow star is present alongside the chosen email now.

Step 4. If you have opened the email to read, you can find the star option on the top right corner of the message, which can be simply clicked to enable the star feature.

How to remove the star from an email?

Step 1. Open the concerned Gmail account.

Step 2. Find the email that has already starred.

Step 3. Click on the yellow star to remove the enabled star feature. The yellow star will turn back to normal, indicating that the star status is removed from the email. 

How to find the starred emails?

Step 1. Open the concerned Gmail account.

Step 2. From the window that appears, find the Starred folder that is present on the left side of the account.

Step 3. When clicked on the Starred mail folder, the starred emails will appear.

How to customize the star option?

Step 1. Open the Gmail account on the device.

Step 2. Click on the Settings option that appears at the top right portion of the Gmail window. 

Step 3. Click on the See All Settings option from the drop-down menu that appears. 

Step 4. Find the General section in the Settings.

Step 5. Find the Stars section under the General settings.

Step 6. From the list of in-use and not-in-use stars, as many stars as possible can be shifted to use. 

Step 7. Once the necessary changes are entered, click on the Save the Changes option which appears at the end of the General Settings.

How to mark an email starred while composing it?

Step 1. Open the concerned Gmail account.

Step 2. Click on the compose option that appears on the top left of the account.

Step 3. From the compose window that appears, find three vertical dots in the bottom right, next to the delete option, and click on it.

Step 4. From the drop-down menu, click on the Label option.

Step 5. Under the Label option, find the Add star option and click on it to turn the composing email to be starred.
